bimetal_plates
bimetallic plates Lithographic plates in which the printing image base is
formed of one metal and the bon-printing area of a second meval. Generally, the
printing area is formed of copper, while the non printing areas may be nickel,
chromium, or stainless steel. Some plates employ a third metal as a base or
backing and could be regarded as trimetallic, multimetallic or polymetallic.
Both surface and deep-etch platemaking techniques are used in the making of such
plates. With a plating of chromium on copper sheet, the resist stencil of deep-etch
method permits etching chromium from image to reach copper for base of lithographic
image; with plating of copper on stainless steel base, surface platemaking methods
temporarily protect the image while copper is etched away to give stainless steel
for non-printing areas of plate.
