Bunches of needles
In intaglio engraving when the metal is worked directly with a tool (such as in
drypoint*) artists at times use needles
put together in "bunches" as a kind of crayon. The lines laid by such a tool are
slightly blurred as in points with several tips. Three-pointed tools were
used as early as the 18th century in the
crayon* method. [* emery stone
pencil].
