Caricature
Almost from the very beginning prints were devoted to the art of caricature.
Caricature first appeared in Northern Europe as of the 16th century and spread in
the 17th century when it began to take on political overtones. Political caricature
was to become increasingly important in 18th century France and England. Hogarth,
Goya, and Daumier all excelled in the art of caricature which reached its apogee in
the 19th century thanks to the satirical newspapers.
