hammer
printing
A manual impression technique
sometimes used to print woodcuts and particularly small format
woodcuts. The inked wood block is placed face down on the sheet of
paper to be impressed and is then hammered once with a sharp, hut not
brutal, blow. This method of printing is in opposition to manual
printing techniques which rely on
rubbing with a
frotton,
a
burnisher,
or yet other instruments
(printing
presses).
