incunabula
A word derived from the latin word incunabulum, meaning cradle or
beginning. Generally speaking the term is used to denote the first printed books
although incunabula specifically refers to books printed before 1500. There are
various types of incunabula, xylographic incunabula being distinct from
typoqraphic incunabula. By extension one may also speak of
lithographic incunabula and photographic incunabula when refering to
the first results of these reproductive techniques.
