interassiles
Latin term to designate dotted manner work. The term was first used by the monk Theophilus (+/- 12th century) in his treatise on goldsmith work. Chapter 71 of the 3rd book speaks of de opere interassile which is engraving on copper with a point. The reason for which the term was adopted by engraving is no doubt due to the fact that the dotter manner work and the interassiles process practised by goldsmiths are both white line techniques (see also white) However, dotted manner work is actually closer to opus punctile, a type of engraving which uses a point hammered into a metal surface.
