justify
In
letterpress printing the individual lines of a text are all meant to
end with an equal margin on the right hand side of the line. In order
to have one equal margin the typesetter must introduce a certain
amount of blank spaces in order to compensate for the varying number
of words and letters to be accomodated on each line. Justifying can
also apply to vertical distances on a page.
