lac
Resinous
incrustation formed on trees of the Far East. This crust forms on
their bark when they are attacked by insect parasites (Laccifer
lacca). Lac comes in various forms and may he refined. Bichromated
lac is used in one of the metal plate copying processes
[photographic].
Lac is also used in making
varnishes
[gums
and resins].
Lac is one of the ingredients of
shellac,
one of the basic products in oriental decorative arts. Shellac may be
either red or black in colour.
