Stones Crayon, leather rollers for lithography

There are two main types of hand rollers to distribute the ink on the printing surface. A type with a leather cover usually used for printing with black ink. The other kind has a rubber coating, and is usually used for color printing. The difference between leather rolls and rubber rolls, etc., is that leather is porous. It absorbs fluid and releases it again. Distributing ink over a printing form can then lead to a better ink distribution. With litho there is always water present on the stone. A rubber is not able to absorb this water. The water will therefore partially emulsify with the ink, causing the quality of the ink to deteriorate rapidly. This problem is less of a problem with a leather roll because the water is partially absorbed by the leather and therefore does not emulsify with the ink. The leather rolls as supplied by the supplier cannot be used immediately, but must be prepared. |

 Why are Stones Crayons leather litho rolls in a class of their own? The rollers are covered with leather. So there is always a "seam" where the leather is sewn or glued. If this connection is not made "seamless", this "seam" may be visible on the stone and eventually on the print. Stones Crayons is a master at getting rid of this seam. See image above. The seam is practically invisible.. |
