Composing sticks for typography (use of lead type)
A composing stick is a tool for a hand compositor. The width of the line, is adjusted by sliding the sliding bar to the right place and secure it. Normally the width corresponds with a number of cicero's The hand compositor stands next to the composing frame. He keeps the composing stick in one hand. With the other hand, he takes the characters from the frame and puts them in the right order into the composing stick. When a line is complete he transfers it to the galley. Several lines together are secured by binding a rope around them. |
