Japanese Side Grain Woodblocks, for woodcut

Katsura side grain wood

This tree species, Cercidiphyllum japonicum (Japanese Judas tree), can reach 40-45 m in height with a trunk of 2 m in diameter; it is one of the largest "hardwood" trees in Asia. This wood is made from the "Japanese Judas Tree", the material from which the traditional Japanese woodcuts were made. This wood is fairly soft and easy to cut. It is free from "knots" and other iniquities. Wood is a natural material, so a piece of wood may be slightly curved. This shouldn't be a problem during printing, especially when printing with the "baren", the traditional Japanese printing tool. Printing is also possible on an etching press or platen press. If necessary, place a PVC plate (approx. 5 mm thick) on the printing plate and paper, so that the pressure forces of the press are evenly distributed over the wood block via the PVC plate.
