In order to make the various plates needed to print a multicolour print one must
carefully select each one of the colours to be used as each one then becomes a plate
to be superimposed. This selection can be done photographically or manually. When
working manually each colour is outlined by means of a transparency which is in turn
transferred either manually or photographically onto the plates. The outlines of
this transparency give the shape of the coloured area. This procedure is mostly used
in lithography and in silkscreening when an original design is being reproduced. It
is not a necessary procedure if the artist prepares the various colours himself.
