Charcoal
Charcoal and more precisely willow and linden charcoal are used in
polishing* metal plates for engraving.
When bought this charcoal is in the shape of a large rectangular stick. Before using
it wear down the end to a 45° angle as compared to the horizontal surface. The
charcoal stick should then be rubbed back and forth in a bath of mineral oil or oil.
The rubbing must always be done at the same angle and in the same direction. A
pumicing* of the plate must be done before
using the charcoal since the latter is not able to even up the plate nor is it
suited to removing deep scratches. [
