Colouring
The colouring of prints is an ancient practice. It has been used for posters,
pictures, and maps. Chronologically the colouring of prints was practiced before the
multi-plate or dolly* colour printing processes and continued to be practiced after
the invention of these processes, especially for popular prints. The water colours
used for this purpose were applied with brushes on various parts of the print,
usually between the main black lines and often covering areas with cross-hatching.
The stencil* system of colouring is still in use for deluxe books and has been used
to produce very beautiful results.
