graphite; blacklead
A finely powdered form of carbon, used in:
1.
electrotype moulding for the free release (without sticking) of the wax after
the mould is made, and to help prevent side-slipping during moulding.
2. in coating the case to provide a conductive film to the surface of the mould.
3. in coating the surface of the matrix in plastic platemaking in order to effect a
free release of the plate from the matrix.
4. coating wax as a lubricant for space-bands of typesetting machines.
5. the manufacture of lead pencils.
