juxtapose
In colour printing there are various ways of applying different colours on an impression. Colours can be either mixed, superimposed, or juxtaposed. If the third technique is chosen the colour areas should not overlap so that each colour will keep its own hue. Nevertheless, these colour areas will affect each other on account of their contrasts (see the simultaneous contrast law of Chevreul). Such reactions are, of course, purely optical phenomenae. Juxtaposition is used above all in solid colour printing (woodcuts, serigraphy).
