C.I. Natural Orange 4. History and application: Ancient. Obtained from the tropical Uruku tree. Seeds are found in the pods which burst open to discharge roughly 80 seeds per pod. Used to dye textiles. Soluble in hydrosulphite and fat with potash and alum. The number and types of mordants govern the final shade obtained.

C.I. Natural Blue 1. History and application: Ancient. Comes from the tropical Campeche tree. An extract is made of the heartwood. Can be used to dye wool, silk and cotton. Soluble in water. The number and types of mordants used determine the shade and colour.

C.I. Natural Red 4 .History and application: 16th century. A red colorant obtained from the fertilised females of the cochineal Coccus insect, which inhabits certain cactus species in the Canary islands. Can be used to dye wool and silk a purple to bright red colour. Beautiful colour obtained with tin chloride mordant. Colour and shade are governed by the number and type of mordants used.

C.I. Natural Black N/A History and application: 19th century. Ancient. Can be found in Dutch woodlands. They are the little round balls on oak leaves, caused by the sting of the gall wasp. Can be used to make ink and dye wool and silk. Gives greyish to blackish shade.

C.I. Natural Yellow 11. Historie en toepassing: Oudheid. Is Afkomstig van het kernhout van de Moerbei boom. De boom komt voor in Brazilië, Argentinië en Midden Amerika.
Bevat Morine, een geelachtige kleurstof. Toepasbaar voor het verven van wol, zijde, katoen en leder. Het aantal en soort beitsmiddel bepaalt de kleurtint.

Wouw bevat de kleurstoffen luteoline en apigenine die hem geschikt maken voor gele verfstof. De grootste concentraties bevinden zich in de toppen van de spruiten en in de zaden. Voor de verfwinning werd de wouw eerst in water gekookt met oude urine om het uittrekken van de verfstoffen te bevorderen. Voor het verven van textiel werden aluin en zemelen gebruikt als beits.
